The Bank of England Base Rate is the interest rate paid by the Bank of England on funds deposited with it by other banks. It is the official interest rate for the United Kingdom.
The Bank of England has set interest rates since it's formation in 1694 under a variety of names - the Bank Rate (1694 to 1972), the Minimum Lending Rate (1972 to 1981), the Minimum Band 1 Lending Rate (1981 to 1996), the Repo Rate (1997 to 2005) and presently the Official Bank Rate (2006 to date).
